More about Grandpa Jensen's siblings:
Peder and Rasmine had 11 children in all:
Jens Lauritz 1875-1941
Maren Kirstine 1876-?
Peder Simmer Gregers 1877-1948
Niels Poul 1879-?
Hans Peder 1881-1882 (lived only 7 weeks)
Meta Margrethe 1883-1949
Hans Peder 1884-
Karl Anton 1885-1975
George Rasmus 1886-1964
Johannes Frederik 1888-1974
unnamed baby girl 29 Jan 1890-30 Jan 1890
(and then Rasmine died on 31 Jan 1890)
Uncles Jens and Pete were the first to come to America, in 1894. They farmed in North Dakota for a time, and Uncle Bob spent a few summers out there when he was a teenager. I found the following information:
1910 federal census Morton County, Township 136 ND
Jens L Jensen, age 35 head single
white male, farmer born
Denmark
Peter Jensen, age
32, brother single
white male, farmer born
Denmark
1920 federal census Minneapolis
Jens L Jensen was as a lodger in a
hotel at 1819 5th Street, Minneapolis, Ward 6 – unemployed;
emigrated in 1894. In the column
Naturalization is “Pa” (PA is
an abbreviation for "first papers." The alien has filed his
declaration of intention, and is in the process of naturalizing.)
1940 federal census Minneapolis
Jens Jensen was now living at 1607 E 24th
Street, Minneapolis single white male,
b ~1875 Denmark. Citizenship: Naturalized.
Laborer, for the city of Minneapolis (sewage department). Salary $1300/year. Also living at this address is his 54 year
old single Norwegian housekeeper Helga Norgaard.
Looking through old Minneapolis CityDirectories, I found that Grandpa lived at 1607 E 24th
street before Jens did, but as a renter. In 1926,
George and Anna bought the house at 2728 Bloomington Ave, and Jens lived on
24th (as a renter), and by 1927 he owned it.
So looks like my father’s recollection that Uncle Jens bought the house
from his father George is incorrect (unless possibly Uncle CARL owned the house and
rented it to George first and then sold it to Jens…?).
By searching the Minneapolis Building Permits, I found that in 1928 – Jens built an 18x20 foot
frame garage on the property. (The house currently located at this
address was built in 2004.)
From Ancestry: RE Peter Gregor’s obituary:
Name: Peter
G. Jensen
Gender: Male
Death Age: 70
Birth Date: abt 1878
Residence Place: 3324
Nineteenth avenue S.
this is the address Grandma and Grandpa lived at (across the street from
the grade school)
Death Date: Abt 1948
Obituary Date: 4 Jun 1948
Obituary Place: Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States of
America
Siblings: Carl A. George John F.
So – the six brothers who came to
America were Jens, Peter, Hans (Lena), Carl,
George (Anna), and John (Elsie).
Jens, Peter and Carl were bachelors.
Peter must have stayed in North Dakota to farm, and at some point
returned to Minneapolis, where he died. I surmise that he moved in with Grandpa
and Grandma on 19th Avenue and died there. (The house currently at 3324 19th
was built in 2000. The houses on either
side were built in 1909 and 1910, so it seems reasonable to speculate that
Grandpa’s house was built at about the same time. I do not know whether he built it or not.)
Grandpa Jensen’s siblings that stayed
in Denmark were
Niels Poul, b 1879, Maren Kirstine b 1876, and Meta Margrethe 1883-1949.
I do not know what
happened to Maren.
Meta married Hans Hansen 1880-1951
and had a family… and I’ve been in touch with some of her descendants in
Denmark. Their children were:
Inger Rasmine 1906-1996
Ellen Margrethe 1907-1992
Niels Peder 1909-1991
Edith Dortha Helvina 1910-1978
Svend Aage 1912-1989
Else Margo 1915-1984
Emmy Gudrun 1919-1989
Eva Kirstine 1924-1986
Niels married Jenny Rasmine Nielsine
Rasmussen Slot on 1 Feb 1918 at Løjtofte kirke, Lolland Nørre, Maribo. They had four children: Niels Viggo Sloth
Jensen, 1922-1922, Niels Poul Sloth Jensen 1925-2013, and two others (listed as
private in Jesper Direkte18’s family tree on Ancestry.com).
Niels Poul Sloth Jensen was born 25
Feb 1925 in Ryde Skov, and died 12 Mar 2013 in Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen. He and his wife (private) had a daughter
Marianne Slot, 1952-2013.
